A Sleeve Gastrectomy: Performed By Loren Borud For Special Cases
Plastic surgeon Loren Borud is a specialist in several procedures that are designed to help the clinically obese lose weight, especially those who have proven to be unresponsive to dieting and exercise. One such procedure is known as a sleeve gastrectomy, and it is usually reserved for patients for whom other procedures, such as a duodenal switch or gastric bypass, are considered too risky. But a sleeve gastrectomy can sometimes be combined with either of those two procedures if it is initially successful but weight loss ceases.
In a nutshell, a sleeve gastrectomy consists of a series of surgical procedures to reduce a patient’s stomach to just 15% of its original size, using a minimally invasive method of surgery known as laparoscopy. Once the bulk of the stomach has been removed, Loren Borud uses instruments such as surgical staples to attach the open ends. The resultant stomach is shaped like a tube or sleeve – hence the name. The reduced stomach absorbs far less food than before, significantly contributing to weight loss.
