Dr. Loren Borud: A Behind-The-Scenes Look On Plastic Surgery

In Plastikonomics: What I Learned as a Harvard Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Loren Borud gives readers a tour of plastic surgery behind the scenes. Stripped of the glamour and grandeur of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, the book tells us what a plastic surgeon’s life is generally like from an economic standpoint. It covers everything from what makes these surgeons tick, to what affects their choices as medical practitioners, to how changes in medical and consumer trends, and even medical laws can carve the landscape of the industry.

Dr. Loren Borud has had over 20 years of medical experience, eight of which were spent as a faculty member of Harvard Medical School, where he eventually rose to the rank of Assistant Professor of Surgery. In Dr. Borud’s years there, he became known for specializing in body contouring after massive weight loss. His years of training and his residency gave him the expertise and insight to write Plastikonomics, delving into details that most consumers are not even aware of. Through Plastikonomics, he shows that plastic surgery isn’t always pretty.

Dr. Borud also discusses patient options, giving tips on how to choose the right plastic surgeon. He talks about how doctors respond to incentives and how these ultimately affect their performance and judgment. He also gives his take on what is to come in the field of plastic surgery.

Dr. Borud has taken time off from his surgical practice to focus on his writing and on working for his medical consulting firm, Borud Consulting, where he specializes in advising companies on biotechnology and medical devices, as well as surgical tools. He also addresses his clients’ concerns on private equity and venture capital. These days, Dr. Borud runs a business that specializes in marketing to patients and physicians, strategic planning, designs and innovations, and medical micro-economics.
